Sometimes I get a little hangry: Here are some filling foods that boost metabolism
In the past, I have tried to lose body fat with little to no supervision. Mostly I would go cold turkey on junk food and then buy a bunch of “health” food. I would never feel satiated, get hungry, then get hangry. After I got hangry, I reached for the foods with the most instant gratification, which usually meant carbohydrate heavy junk foods or something sugary. And then guess what? I’d go running back to eating the same way I always did because I thought it helped me feel better.
The science behind Hangry
Well, it turns out that there is a little validity behind getting angry when you get hungry. According to DNews, a study was done concerning glucose levels in the body and how people managed their mood. The study was a little odd, in that the participants were each given a voodoo doll and were told that the dolls represented their spouses. They were asked throughout the study to jab pins into the doll and the scientists measured their glucose levels. Interestingly, they found the participants were more likely to insert more pins into the doll when their glucose levels were down.

When I think about the voodoo & glucose study and contrast it to people who I know to focus on health and wellness and those who don’t, I have observed that fit people have their mood better under control. I’ve even discovered that in myself when I am best able to manage my nutrition I am better able to control my mood.
Another awesome benefit to avoiding peaks and valleys in glucose levels? I can do it with foods that keep me fuller longer and help boost my metabolism. That’s right, I can eat foods that help me lose weight and possibly be in a better mood. It’s a win / win, right?
Name the foods!!
Grapefruit – This is one of my daily staples. I start nearly every morning with a grapefruit. My favorites breakfast is one that is fresh and fruity, so I might as well start with one that will keep me full and boost the metabolism. The pulp contains pectin, a soluble fiber that helps you feel fuller longer and assists the body in reducing fat storage. Oh, and my little girl loves grapefruit even more than I do, so I usually have to share – and I’m still satiated afterward!
Blueberries – When they’re in season, I get my hands on as many of these as I can. I just like to eat them fresh from the carton. They don’t last long enough to use them in any sort of recipe! It does make me wish I lived closer to a blueberry farm…
Nuts – I have to eat these sparingly, and so should you. Have you ever actually looked at the servings size on these things? I used to think because they’re “healthy” I could eat as many as I wanted and I was taking care of myself. Wrong! That doesn’t mean they’re bad for you, but it does mean we should watch the serving sizes. Many nuts are full of Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which help boost immunity, lose weight, and feel satiated.
Eggs – “When I was a lad I ate four dozen eggs Every morning to help me get large And now that I’m grown I eat five dozen eggs So I’m roughly the size of a barge” – Gaston. Ok, so please don’t eat five dozen eggs every day.. But seriously, eggs pack a lot of protein and help us feel fuller longer. That means we eat fewer total calories throughout the day and more weight loss. Plus, they’re pretty tasty 🙂
Salmon – Once again, a favorite of mine. Lean protein loaded with Omega 3 Fatty Acids. I, of course, follow my Beachbody portion control guidelines, but I could eat salmon all day every day if I could. Salmon will provide a ridiculous amount of nutrients and are known to help improve cardiovascular health.
Broth-Based Soups – Homemade is the best, by far. Too many commercially produced cans of soup are full of salt and preservatives. When you make your own, you control the quality of the ingredients and the sodium content. When you eat soup, the high water content means you feel full on fewer calories.
